Jane Backes' Story

My passion for horses began when I got my first horse in 1971 and I am proud to say, it has never stopped! My family, Leon my husband, and Blake, my son, are not into the horses but are very supportive of the time and effort they require. We have a 34 acre Ranch in Tioga, TX. It is equipped with two fully heated barns, a 70’ Round Pen, an indoor arena, several separate pastures with lots of trees and ponds and a house where we stay on the weekends.

I started out showing in youth. I qualified for the Youth World 3 times in Halter, Showmanship, and Western Riding all on the same horse. This instilled a goal of producing an All Around Horse in my breeding program. I continued to ride and show until my parents said "college!" so off I went to Southern Methodist University and got my degree in International Marketing and Psychology. I hated the idea of not having horses in school so I started the first SMU Polo team and I played Polo for 4 years.

In 1984, I bred my youth mare who produced my first foal named Impressed Headto Toe, who earned a Double Superior in Western Pleasure. After a brief break, I started back showing in 1995 and have not stopped since.

I have always loved studying the bloodlines and conformation of horses since I was a chilkd, reading all of the Quarter Horse Journals from cover to cover. This led me to my passion for breeding. My goal was always to improve the individual and not just to reproduce it. I coined the phrase “The Magic is in the Mare” which is the backbone of my breeding program. I believe the mare passes on at LEAST 65% of the foals attributes. When picking a broodmare, I always look at the first 2-3 generations of the Maternal line. By using this philosophy consistently, I have raised AQHA Reserve World Champions, Congress Champions as well as multiple World and Congress Top Tens, NSBA World & Reserve World Champions, AQHA Honor Roll top tens, Multiple Superiors and ROM’s and two Justin Rookie of the Year Horses.

As a breeder, I get enormous satisfaction showing only the offspring of the mares I have bred. I believe in my program 100% and want our clients to feel comfortable that I am there for them before, during and after any business we might conduct --whether they buy one of the babies I have bred or breed their mare to my stallion. If I pick a Backes Bred to show and promote, they can too! Many of my sales are return customers. I stay in touch with them and share in their success.

I have World and Congress level western pleasure prospects available from a long time PROVEN program at affordable prices. My Backes Bred’s go on to achieve very successful All Around careers for Amateur and Youth.

Outside of my horse passion, I have worked for 20 years for a Children’s Charity, New Horizons, which provides support for sexually and physically abused Children. When Leon and I lost our daughter Audrey Grace at birth, we started the Audrey Grace House in her name. Every year the Horse Community gets together in her honor and raises over $50K to help fund the home located in Abilene, Texas. Leon & I value each and every donation in Audrey Grace's honor.  Thank you.
